Steelcase, IDEO Ally; Kelley Named Steelcase VP

Grand Rapids, MI - January 15, 1996 - "A smarter way to work" is the way CEOs of Steelcase and IDEO Product Development describe their new relationship. Today the leader in the office furniture industry and largest independent product design and development firm in the country announced an agreement of co-development, with a unique executive management twist.

"This new relationship will benefit all of our existing and new customers, as well as our individual companies," Steelcase Inc. CEO James P. Hackett explained today.

In a unique management move, David M. Kelley will remain CEO of IDEO and also act as vice president of technical discovery and innovation for Steelcase, where he will be part of a top-management team focused on the company" long-term innovation strategy and processes.

"Innovation is the responsibility of our entire organization," Hackett noted. "But we are fortunate to have in David Kelley someone who has demonstrated an exceptional competency in creating invention and innovation."

Steelcase will continue to maintain its own product development capability. "We have very talented designers and engineers within our organization. This move provides even greater opportunity for collaboration to support our product development effort," Hackett noted.

Kelley founded IDEO Product Development in 1978. Credited with having developed the mouse for Apple Computer, IDEO has designed a variety of products including computers, office equipment, medical instrumentation, process equipment, telephony, furniture, and consumer products. The company is based in Palo Alto, California and has offices in Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, London and Tokyo.

Kelley, a tenured professor in product design at Stanford University, will maintain that position as well as his leadership role at IDEO. He will continue to be based in Palo Alto.
